Recap(ture my sanity)

I know- I've neglected my blog this past week.  Shame on me. Today I promise to make it up to you. I think Captain Von Trapp says it best :

"Your whole life will be different now.  I'll take you anywhere you want to go- give you anything you wish"

Yes, your whole life will be different now. I will forever change your life with witty rehearsal stories. I will take you anywhere you wish (as long as it's to the School House July 5-22: buy your tickets here!) and give you anything you wish (in the form of rehearsal recaps and pictures).

So, let's bring you up to speed! This week in Sound of Music rehearsal-

1) We continue to fail at leap frog.  "What's leap frog?  Is it an xbox game?" *stunned silence*

2) Making a straight line is harder than it looks.

3) Young love continues to blossom.  (As do Kiki's rehearsal bruises...)

4) Steve is working on his happy face.  I think he is still sad due to his recent rejection.

In short, we are working hard! Three weeks from today we will give our first performance. We hope to see you there!!

Rejection

Do you see this face? This is the face of one who has been rejected.
Or so I've been told...

Let's back up. Today was a blocking rehearsal. We actually got through a big chunk of the show- GO US!

We worked through several scenes including Liesl and Rolph's big scene, the thunderstorm, and the party.  By the end of rehearsal, we were at the point where things heat up between Maria and the Captain. So we are going along, reading lines and taking notes, and I feel I tug on my hand.  I've lost my place in the script and am looking for my line and realize that Steve is ready to kiss me. To this I promptly respond " I'm not kissing you today.  I'm sick."

A chorus of " awwwww" and "DENIED!" echoed throughout the rehearsal room. I thought I was being courteous! If I rejected anything, I rejected the opportunity to give Steve my exceptionally fabulous cough.  But look at that face.  The "rejection" cut deep, and now I feel guilty. *sad face*

I'm not really cold and unfeeling - I swear!

Defense Exhibit 1: Comforting Gretl during the thunderstorm

Gretl thinks I'm nice.  I get lots a great hugs from her.  Maybe she will put in a good word for me with Steve. I'll need all the help I can get to help him move past this COLOSSAL rejection in front of the entire cast!

Guiltily yours,
Janelle

A Lonely Goatherd

High on a hill was coughing actress
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was her voice through the sickly grossness
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo.....

Yes, today we sang and choreographed the Lonely Goatherd. I love the song- it might be my favorite song in the show- but today the song did not love me. After each verse, the hills echoed with my glorious hacking. This Maria is in serious need of a cough drop.

Luckily, the children are still cute. I mean, just look at them-

So- today the hills were alive with...

One little girl with a real sore throat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Kids smiled back and wildly gestured
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

In came Bruce and a lion roar heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
But the play he must have misheard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo....

It was one of those nights.

Cough drops and Lederhosen,
Janelle

The Sound of Music

Good evening all!

I don't know if you've heard, but Schoolhouse Arts will be presenting Rogers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music July 5-22.  The musical is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. It tells the story of a young nun who leaves her life at the convent to become a governess to the 7 children of an ex- naval captain. If you have never seen the show, you are in for a real treat!

So what exactly is the point of this blog? That's a really good question....

As an actor, I've always thought one of the best parts of a show is the rehearsal process. I love getting to know the characters and the actors that bring them to life.  So when I was cast in this production, I thought I would share our rehearsal experiences with you.

Stay tuned for ridiculous cast stories, kiddie-quotes, and rehearsal photos.  I promise you'll be entertained.

Auf Wiedersehen,

Janelle
